Over 3 million people in the United States suffer from glaucoma. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness and is most prevalent in the African American and Latino populations. Glaucoma is an eye disease that slowly steals sight from someone without any warning. It can affect anyone at any age and is a form of vision loss caused by damage of the optic nerve. There is currently no cure, but medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. Early detection of glaucoma is key in stopping the progression of the disease. It is important to have regular eye exams, so that if detected, treatment can begin immediately. Risk factors include:

§ Age >60

§ Having family members with glaucoma

§ Diabetics

§ People who are severely nearsighted
